WeathAR App

A weather application that has an inbuilt Augmented reality feature showing real-time AR features when projected over a map. The AR animation changes over place and time according to the hovering.

Tools: Lens studio, Android studio, Figma, 3ds Max

Overview:

Augmented Reality + Art

An Weather app that integrates the weather data from the app and AR designed using lens studio which will project the weather details over the 4 zones on the map of the USA. Inspired when doing my artist presentation on AR artists and wanted to integrate this kind of data into AR. Started the project by engraving the map on cardboard and tracking the image through lens studio. Made a topographic map by layering cardboard to give it a 3d depth and effect.

Process:

Used 3ds Max to model the 3d objects like sun, clouds, snow, and rain. Brought them together in the lens studio application of snap chat. Wrote code to integrate the lens and animation created in the lens studio and made the lens active by sending it to the application I created. Got approval from Snapchat to make the lens active and hidden accessed only by my application.

Usually, the review process takes a day and gets updated whenever the lens is used. Learned a lot of animation techniques while doing the AR through lens studio. This project became the jump start for me in learning AR for the first time and experiencing different kinds of techniques for integrating art and data.

Making the application in the android studio was a big learning experience for me. Coming from a design and media major, getting to know to make an app was a stepping stone. Designed the interface and application where the data for the application is through the web weather API.

Making sure the app was working through several test runs and linking the lens studio lens in the application through lens button integration.

Recorded the change in the weather over a week and documented the process. Change in weather and made animation high when the weather is extreme at places. so the fast animation indicates the peak weather.
